EMDR Therapy
Radcliff, KY
What is EMDR?
Let’s start at the beginning EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. It’s a mouthful I know, but all means is it is a type of therapy that helps with trauma, anxiety, specific phobias (like heights, needles, etc.), and many other mental illnesses. It is currently the most researched of all the recent therapies.
I will be explaining how EMDR works through trauma and the effects trauma has on memories and the brain. The way EMDR works is by changing the way traumatic or negative memories are stored. When a traumatic event happens, such as childhood abuse, neglect, war, sexual assault, etc., that memory is stored in the brain with no time or date stamp on it. For the person who has experienced a traumatic event they can feel as though the traumatic event can happen at any time or is happening right now. EMDR puts that time and date stamp on that memory so the brain knows what happened is in the past. This means when that person is triggered by a recent event they will no longer have a strong emotional reaction to that event.
So does that mean your going to hypnotise me?
No, you are fully alert and aware of what is being done and said.
Are there any risks?
Yes, as with everything in life there are risks to EMDR. They are:
- Distressing and/or unresolved memories may come up
- You will most likely continue to reprocess after the session is over (this is normal and it’s your brains way of reprocessing other memories attached to the reprocessed memory)
- You may experience physical sensations, images, and emotions associated with the memory being reprocessed
- You may experience vivid dreams after a reprocessing session
- There is also no side effects if you choose to end the EMDR sessions
What are the benefits?
The biggest benefit is the freedom that comes with being able to live your life without fear or anxiety. Once all the EMDR reprocessing sessions are over and there are no more negative or traumatic memories to reprocess they are not like to ever hold an emotional charge like they did before the reprocessing.
